Memory foam pillow vs latex pillow vs feather pillow

So what are these pillows all about then?
Do you like to sleep? I do. I don't get enough of it, but I like it when I do get some. In fact looking at that picture of that woman there makes me jealous as she looks so comfortable, even though she's almost certainly just posing for the photo, isn't even asleep and knowing women, is probably quite cold. I've never known a woman that could lie in bed like that without the covers pulled at least up their chin and probably higher. And they still complain of being cold.
Anyway this guide isn't about women and their night time cover hogging antics, but is about pillows. I've tried duck feather, memory foam and also latex pillows in the last couple of years and this article about what I thought about them for anyone who is thinking of buying a new pillow and wants to know about those newfangled foam contraptions..
What are they made from and how do they work?
The pillow is made from polyurethane foam, which softens when heat is applied. The heat of your body is enough to make this happen. You can usually press your hand or any other body part into it, pull it out and see an imprint for a while afterwards. They mould to the shape of your neck and hard to support it better than a standard pillow.
Contour pillow
This type of pillow supports your neck as well as your head. They're a bit weird looking compared to regular old fashioned pillows. They are extremely comfortable though. These are great if you ever have neck or back pain as they hold your head in a natural position. Most have a high side and a low side, so you can choose how much you want to support your neck.
The only problem with them is that they are a totally different feeling to a regular pillow, so you might find them a bit strange to lie on while you're getting used to them. The other thing is that they're not really that high, so if you're used to having a couple of pillows normally, these will feel pretty low. Another thing and this is not very nice to say, but they soak up sweat so get heavier and less bouncy as time goes on.
Before that stage though, they're incredibly comfortable. I was actually amazed when I first tried one.
Good old fashioned pillow. But in memory foam.
This is your common or garden pillow, but instead of being in a funky contour shape, it's a standard pillow. I think you know what one of those look like. I tried both when I was shopping and the contour pillow felt better to me. But everyone is different and some may prefer the standard shape.
Latex pillow
After I had tried the duck feather pillows that I just didn't get on with for being too soft and the memory foam pillow, I decided to try a latex pillow. The one I got was a Dunlopillo King. This is bigger than a normal pillow as it is nearly three feet wide. I wanted a big mother of a pillow and I got it. The feel of latex is different to memory foam. It is a lot bouncier and returns back to its normal shape a lot quicker. Unlike a standard or memory foam pillow which can be quite dense and you sleep with your head buried in them, this is lightweight in comparison and springy. Once again it's a strange feeling to start with, I felt like my head was bobbing about on it at first like a nodding dog, but once I'd got used to it, I found it very comfortable again. I can happily sleep in with this pillow so it is almost too good..
I would happily sleep on either type of pillow again, I have read online that some people suffer from breathing issues and eye and nose irritation with polyurethane pillows while latex pillows are fine as they are 100% natural, whereas polyurethane isn't. I never had a problem, but if you are concerned, it may be worth bearing in mind and looking at latex as a primary choice. But then again, millions of people across the world use polyurethane pillows without issue, so it may not be a problem for you.
Either way, whichever you choose, you're pretty much guaranteed a good nights sleep as they are way better than regular pillows. I certainly won't be going back.
Goodnight!
